Plantation Drive: Sand Dune Conservation at Rameshwaram Island
Introduction
Arulagam, a nature conservation NGO based in Coimbatore, is actively involved in sand dune conservation at Rameshwaram Island with the support of UNDP/SGP/GEF/TERI. The project aims to protect 50 hectares of sand dune habitats by planting native tree, herb, and creeper species suited to these ecosystems. As part of this initiative, Arulagam has established a dedicated nursery named Neythal at Mugammathiyaar Puram, Kunthukkal. This nursery has successfully developed over 45,000 saplings specifically for sand dune habitats, with the active participation of local community members.

The event was organized and streamlined by the Arulagam team, Mr. P. Natarajan and Mr. Mohammad Shahith.
Bharathidasan, Secretary of Arulagam, noted that the village might have been named after the abundant pandanus plants that once thrived here. Unfortunately, many of these trees have been destroyed. He emphasized the importance of reviving the original name by planting more pandanus trees. By doing so, we can potentially mitigate the impact of saltwater intrusion and tsunami waves in the future.
Conclusion
Arulagam's work to improve sand dune habitats in Rameswaram Island is a significant milestone. Given the potential for increased climate-related disasters in the future, it is crucial to safeguard the island with the cooperation of all stakeholders. Arulagam continues to make impactful strides in conservation and sustainable development.
